Linux gets REALbasic support in new version 5.5, Mac OS X also improved.

REAL Software announced on February 25th that they would be launching REALbasic 5.5 with full Linux support in their latest version of their cross-platform development environment. This is a major move for the universal acceptance of REAL basic and a feather in the Linux cap. With the addition of a Linux compiler, REALbasic developers working on Mac or Windows platforms can build applications that run on Red Hat Enterprise and SuSE Linux distributions, as well as other Linux distributions that have the GTK+ 2.0 and CUPS libraries.

There will also be additional “enhanced” features for Mac OS X in this release. REAL Software said that there are more that 100 new features and many improvements that users had asked for.

A favorite with many corporate users and independent developers, REALbasic has proven useful in producing Microsoft's Office compatible applications and add-on’s. REAL Software also said that those compatibilities have also been improved. REALbasic compatible applications interacting with Office have had to depend on the use of plug-ins as an interface, now the syntax used to create REALbasic applications is nearly identical to Microsoft’s VBA (Visual Basic for Applications), without the necessity of the plug-ins.

There are also a myriad of improvements to REALbasic’s database support (REALdb), the Debugger, Compiler, SQL support and its programming language
